WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an Best item upgrade by 3. A random substat is also increased with each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrade upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used to upgrade will be consumed forever and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be used to create the enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and is accessible at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each several weeks.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current level of the item being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will display a preview of an item level upgrade's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via various methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been altered a bit, with numerous new features added. Crests

The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Using these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system will introduce a few modifications to the upgrade process. Once a piece of gear has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one use and it's crucial to use them wisely. For instance, it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character that will be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
