Pragmatics and Semantics

Many of the current philosophical theories of pragmatics concentrate on semantics. Brandom for instance is focused on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic point of view).

The fundamental premise of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a principle for defining the meaning of hypotheses through exploring their 'practical implications' - their implications for experience in specific situations. This creates a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a kind of 'inquiry-based epistemology', and an anti-Cartesian explication of the norms that govern inquiry. Semantics and Pragmatics are often viewed as being on opposite ends of the continuum with semantics on the near side and pragmatics on the other. Carston for instance claims that there are at a minimum three general lines of contemporary pragmatics people who view it as a philosophy along the lines of Grice or others who focus on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics includes issues such as the resolution of confusion, the use of proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras and presupposition. It is also thought to encompass some issues involving specific descriptions.
